In 2006, Via Mundo started its program for placing foreign students in Northeastern Brazilian Colleges and Universities.
Students are offered two types of programs: College or University Placement and College or University Experience Program.
In the first one, the candidate becomes an effective undergraduate student. It is necessary to pass the College or University entrance exams (vestibular) and have a high degree of proficiency in Portuguese.
The second option offers international students the possibility of experiencing College or University in Brazil for one semester or a whole academic year. They come as a Visitor Student and, besides studying the curriculum of the chosen course, they will be offered private Portuguese instruction during the first semester of the program.
Why?Taking part in one of the programs offer international students the opportunity of living in Brazil, getting to know a wide country and a diverse culture, learning or improving their Portuguese, taking part in specific researches and learning new perspectives about the world.
According to estimates by UNESCO, Portuguese is one of the fastest-growing European languages, and the language with the highest potential for growth as an international language in southern Africa and South America. Some of our students have found job and career opportunities because of the Portuguese language, once Brazil is the major commercial partner for many countries in Latin America.
Our students also find fascinating to live a "permanent Summer", since weather in the Northeastern region is warm throughout the year. They also love the easy-going Brazilian way of life and how simple it is to make good friends.
How?Students apply for the program through an official partner organization abroad or directly to Via Mundo. They are supposed to meet the program requirements. Once in Brazil, they either live with a carefully selected host family, in a residence or in a rented flat and study in a private College or University, besides taking part in social, cultural and sport activities. As a special feature of the College or University Experience Program, the students are offered weekly Portuguese lessons during the first semester of the program.
How long?Students will study in Brazil for the duration of their courses as permanent students or during one semester (5 months) or one full academic year (10 months) for the experience program.
When?Students can start their programs either in Late January or Late July. There are colleges and universities with courses beginning either every January or every January and July. Brazilian academic year starts in Late January/early February and ends in the middle of December with a one-month holiday period in July and a nearly two-month holiday period in December and January.
Where? So far, students have lived in São Luís, capital of Maranhão. But program will be extended and will include placement in other small capital and cities of Northeastern Brazil.
Who?Students from 18 years-old from all countries having finished their secondary studies can take part in the programs. For the permanent placement option, they need to be approved in the university entrance exams and have a good proficiency level in Portuguese. For the experience program, students are advised to study basic Portuguese before starting their program.
