The School-To-School Program is a short-term program operated by VIA MUNDO in partnership with foreign and Brazilian schools. It offers students, teachers and school principals the opportunity to visit Brazil and a foreign country in a different and accessible way.
Participants attend school, live with local host families and follow a rich program of activities including trips, cultural visits, sports and social activities.
Many students choose to take part in the program as a way to get to know a country better before applying for a long-term cultural exchange program.
Why?
The program offers the opportunity to:
Where?
Your program will take place either in São Luís, capital of Maranhão (find out more in "About Brazil") or in another city in the state of Maranhão or in the Northeastern region of Brazil.
How?
You will travel with a group of other students and teachers/principals of your school. Once in Brazil, you will live with a carefully selected Brazilian volunteer host family and will attend classes in a private school.
Besides the activities with your host family and at school, you will take part in other activities including trips and cultural visits.
Teachers and principals act as chaperones of the groups.
When?
Students and teachers/principals usually travel during their school breaks and while Brazilian schools are normally operating. A specific period for the program will be agreed between the schools involved.
The Brazilian academic year starts in Late January/early February and ends in the middle of December with a one-month holiday period in July and a nearly two-month holiday period in December/January.
How long?
The length of the stay must be negotiated between the two schools. However, the program typically lasts between two and three weeks.
Who?
Students with 13 to 18 years old and teachers/principals (usually two per school) can join the program. The average number of students participating is 10 per school.
What does the program include?
School-To-School Exchange
The foreign schools participating in the program should be ready to welcome Brazilian students and teachers/principals for an identical program in their country.
Not necessarily the Brazilian students and teachers/principals who have hosted will be traveling abroad. At the same time, other students, teachers and principals in the foreign country can participate in the program and host the Brazilian participants.
The best months for Brazilians to travel would be December, January and February. However other periods are also possible.
